NYPD ID CARD RENEWAL

At the October, 2015 general meeting, a member posed the question: would an expired retiree's PD ID card be accept able for HR 218 qualification.  Our opinion is that the law, as written, requires a "valid ID card in conjunction with HR 218 documentation.  We felt a valid card is necessary not only for the qualifying test but also when in contact with law enforcement while carrying under the provisions of the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA).  We advised our members to renew their ID cards upon ex  We then realized that this issue poses a possible hardship for members living a great distance from New York City.  We therefore set about to find a solution.  With a great deal of help from SBA Vice President Bob Ganley, we began negotiations with various members of the department.  We proposed numerous solutions which were rejected.  Finally in April of 2016, we reached an agreement on a procedure for our "out of town" members.  The procedure is cut in stone and must be followed exactly as presented:

  1. Proxy renewal is available ONLY to members living outside of the five (5) boroughs of New York City and the 5 counties in which active members are permitted to live.
  2. ONLY ID cards issued after November 1, 2002, can be renewed in this way.  In all other circumstances, members will have to personally visit One Police Plaza.

Cards may be renewed within 6 months of the expiration date.  The expiration date will be increased from 5 to 8 years.    A Retiree Application form must be fill out and accompany the ID for renewal.  The form is included on the Links page of this website for download.

THE RSA IS AUTHORIZED TO DELIVER MEMBERS CARDS TO ONE POLICE PLAZA AND RETURN SAME TO MEMBER.
